Maryland Out of School Time

Healthy Behaviors

We know young people have better health and academic outcomes when they are physically active, and have access to healthy food and fresh water.  Afterschool and summer programs are the perfect settings to encourage young people to make the choices that will leady to a healthy lifestyle. Read more about health and out of school time in our case study: Eat, Play, Learn.

We want to inspire afterschool and summer programs to thoughtfully and intentionaly create a culture of health and wellness by:

  1. Partnering with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation to encourage programs to use the Healthy Out of School Time Framework to assess their programs and implement strategies to build healthy behaviors into everyday.

  2. Providing outreach and technical assistance to programs to fully utilize the federal Summer and At-Risk Afterschool Meals Programs.

  3. Connecting programs to partners who provide high quality physical activity and nutrition education curricula and resources.

Apply for a Sports Equipment Grant:

Did you know that 1 in 5 underserved families do not get their kids involved in youth sports because of the price of sporting equipment?  This inability to provide equipment has put a burden on many out of school time programs to provide adequate sporting equipment so their students can reap the mental and physical benefits of youth sports participation.  Leveling the Playing Field collects used sporting equipment throughout the affluent youth sports community so that we can ensure that schools, youth programs and after school programs have the equipment they need to increase participation in athletic activities.  If you have a program or school interested in applying for COMPLETELY FREE sporting equipment please fill out our simple grant form -

If you have questions about the program you can either visit LPF's website at, email them at or call their offices - (301) 844-5620.
